FEMALE
The sows usually have a smooth swelling over their genital area. Sometimes, it can be bumpy looking, making you think it might be a male! If you gently part the genital opening, on a sow, a "Y" shaped opening should appear.

It should usually be pretty easy to sex an adult male -- especially in this case. Note on this photo how you can see the ridge of the shaft underneath the skin between the testicles. This is the same \'ridge\' that you feel for in babies and young boars as well.

Of course, you can still get a penis to extrude on a neutered male.

Hi, My female guinea pig got accidentally pregnant because one of my boys sneaked into her cage! It was so fast I was too late. She however fortunately had 3 healthy babies (1 died though). The 3 babies are now about 4-5 weeks old. I definately checked their genitals....and 2 of them are boys, 1 is a girl. But none of the boys are showing any mounting behaviour at all! Neither do they rumble at all. I have 10 guinea pigs and I love them so much. I have taken care of baby guinea pigs of my own before and the boys rumbled at 3 weeks so it was obvious they were boys. But this bunch...don\'t want to leave their mum and they don\'t want to stop having her milk. Another problem is...the mum won\'t let me take the babies away! She cries desperately for the babies back and even the (supposedly male) babies cry desperately for their mummy. But since I was so concerned for the mum, I took the boys away and the mum was so desperate she actually jumped out of the cage! and I was so concerned if I separate her from the babies, she will go looking for them at night.

I\'m really worried. I don\'t know wwhat to do. My husband and I both checked the genitals so many times...we don\'t know what to do. PLease help.

We love your website and how caring you all are for taking care of unwanted Guinea pigs. We live in Australia and we would like to start a Guinea pig rescue here and also a website in the near future. It would be great if we could partner up with you some day.

Keep up the good work! =) I\'m sure those adorable Piggies really appreciate it. Please reply to my question i\'m so worried about my babies.

Thank you!

What a fantastic web site, sounds we are not alone when we purchased a  female, with hidden bundles inside !!  our little Dora was only 10wks old when we got her along with her 4 so called sisters !!  hmm that definatley wasnt the case either !! We were worried sick, as not knowing how far gone she was, it was down to day by day, we are so pleased to announce that she had 5 healthy babes, and they including mum are all doing well.

Thankyou so much you have made it so much easier for us to identify what sex are in the litter, and so far discovered 1 boy !! so now you have given such graphic pictures i feel so confident we can accuratley sex the rest.

Arn\'t they just the cutest little things at the best of times but the babies are even more adorable.

thankyou again

I\'m replying to Julie\'s post from 5/25/08.
If you have a white pig who was born blind or deformed in any way, it is likely much more serious that appears on the surface. PLEASE read this thread about LETHALS: http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/kitchen/4190-lethal-guinea-pigs.html

Thank you very much for your brilliant website. I am now the proud owner of 11 guinea pigs due to a multitide of pieces of poor advice from pet shops! Luckily I am pet mad so it is not a huge problem but I am keen not to expand my collection further so your website has been invaluable in sexing the new babies. One of the new batch was born with only one eye and is blind in the other. She is underweight as cannot follow Mum easily so we have been up every 2 hours to make sure she gets enough food. The whole family is praying that she pulls through. Even my gruff and tough husband has been giving her extra feeds and geting up in the night. Fingers crossed.
